Hankekuvaus

Hankekuvaus englanniksi:

The TOCANEM 2 project continues the TOCANEM project, which aimed to achieve carbon-neutral metals production in Finland and establish global leadership in process innovations related to carbon-neutral metals production. The TOCANEM 2 project focuses on 1) new CO2-lean and CO2-free processes and operating practices and 2) means to improve the energy and material efficiency of metal production through process integration and treatment of sidestreams. The project not only takes previously identified concepts and technologies to a higher technology readiness level but also embarks on the study of new topics supporting the same overall goal of reducing the CO2 emissions of the Finnish metals industry. The project is built on close collaboration between Finnish metal producers, upstream raw material suppliers, and downstream manufacturers of steel and metal products.

The project is organized into six work packages:

WP1 – Fundamental enablers for the green transition

WP2 – Process integration and digitalization

WP3 – CO2-free processes

WP4 – Complex raw materials and side streams

WP5 – International collaboration

WP6 – Coordination and exploitation

The project aims to deliver significant advances in the development of carbon-neutral metal production processes by bringing together expertise from Finnish research institutes, universities, and global collaboration networks. The project activities strongly promote Finland’s positioning as a global leader in carbon-neutral metals production. The project will not only help to reduce CO2 emissions from industrial activities but also contribute to the long-term competitiveness of the Finnish industry, and the development of a skilled pool of academic and industrial researchers.
