Educationg leading to a degree
Adult education program for primary school teachers
at Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius, you can complete both a bachelor’s degree (180 ECTS credits) and a master’sdegree (120 ECTS credits) in education. The program includes the following components:
- Major Studies in Education: These cover core topics in education.
- Multidisciplinary Studies in Subjects and Topic Areas Taught in Basic Education: These provide a broad understanding of the subjects taught in primary education.
- Communication, Language, and General Studies: These courses enhance communication skills and provide a foundation in languages and general knowledge.
As part of the program, you can also choose to take optional courses related to early childhood education. Additionally, students can utilize offerings from both Jyväskylä University’s Open University and the regular curriculum.
Applicants accepted into the program typically have prior university studies and teaching experience, which are considered when creating their personal study plans (HOPS). The program supports smooth learning through scheduled group guidance sessions and personalized support.
The studies are conducted in a blended learning format, combining face-to-face classes at the university center with online teaching during remote weeks. Students receive iPads for use during their studies. The program lasts approximately two years, with full-time study for about one and a half years. Graduates with a master’s degree are eligible to work as teachers in early childhood education and grades 1–6 of basic education.

Early Childhood Education Teacher Studies
Our early childhood education teacher programs are offered in a blended learning format. The studies include:
- Face-to-Face Classes: Approximately 3 days per month of face-to-face instruction.
- Online Learning: Weekly online classes held in the evenings.
- Independent Study: Self-directed study.
Additionally, the programs include two supervised (unpaid) internships, totaling 15 ECTS credits. The duration of the bachelor’s degree studies (via the open pathway) is approximately 2.5 years.
The main subject of the early childhood education bachelor’s programs organized by Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius is early childhood education.
In these programs, the emphasis is on connecting theory and practice and fostering a community of learning. Work-related tasks and internships conducted individually or in small groups provide opportunities to understand the connections between theory and practice. Students collaborate in small groups, leveraging each other’s expertise and life experiences. Collective reflection is a valuable resource for examining relevant phenomena. Throughout the studies, support is provided for personal growth in teaching and the development of a professional identity in early childhood education.
